TMS Therapy for Depression

When Medication Is Not Enough

Major depression affects millions of Americans, and for roughly 30 percent of those patients, antidepressants do not provide adequate relief. This group is often described as having treatment-resistant depression — and it is exactly the population TMS therapy was developed to help.

TMS of Emerald Coast specializes in non-medication depression treatment at our Fort Walton Beach clinic. We serve patients from across the Emerald Coast, from Destin and Niceville to Navarre and beyond.

How TMS Treats Depression

The FDA approved TMS for major depressive disorder in 2008. The treatment uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex — the region of the brain involved in mood regulation that shows reduced activity in many people with depression. By repeatedly stimulating this area over the course of treatment, TMS works to restore more normal function in the circuits that regulate how we feel.

The pulses are delivered from a coil placed gently against the scalp. There is no sedation, nothing injected, and nothing entering your bloodstream. Most patients describe the sensation as a mild tapping on the scalp. Any initial discomfort typically fades after the first few sessions.

What a Course of Treatment Looks Like

A standard TMS course involves 36 sessions scheduled over approximately six weeks — five days a week, Monday through Friday. Most sessions run about 20 minutes. The Intermittent Theta Burst Stimulation (iTBS) protocol reduces that to 3.5 minutes while delivering equivalent stimulation.

Most patients begin noticing changes within two to four weeks of starting treatment. Full results often come after completing the entire course, so consistency throughout is important.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

TMS is typically recommended when:

  • One or more antidepressant medications have not worked well enough
  • Medication side effects have been difficult to manage or sustain
  • You want to try a drug-free approach before adding another prescription

We see patients age 15 and older. TMS can also be used alongside existing medications — your prescriber and our team can coordinate your overall treatment plan.

Insurance and TRICARE Coverage

TMS therapy for depression is covered by most major insurance plans. TRICARE may cover TMS for qualifying service members, veterans, and their families with a diagnosis of treatment-resistant depression. We verify your benefits before your first appointment and handle the prior authorization process directly.
