What TMS Therapy Does
TMS — Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation — uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. The treatment is non-invasive and takes place in an outpatient setting. There’s no sedation, nothing in your bloodstream, and no recovery time. You arrive for your session, sit comfortably while the device delivers treatment, and leave when it’s done.
The FDA cleared TMS for major depression in 2008 and for OCD in 2018. A standard course of treatment is 36 sessions over six weeks. Most sessions run about 20 minutes; the Intermittent Theta Burst (iTBS) protocol can run as short as 3.5 minutes.
